Warcrow: Hearthguards

Axe and shield, and a very old idea about how a war should be fought. The Hearthguards are dwarven warfare distilled: disciplined, defensive, and largely uninterested in whatever clever plan is happening on the other side of the table.

Their job is to be the last line for the strongholds, which in practice means they rarely have to do it. An enemy that has reached them has already gone badly wrong somewhere earlier. That is the strategic argument for the unit and also a reasonable description of how it feels to play against: an opponent spends the game trying to avoid the part of your army that is simply not going to move.

For a player choosing a faction, this is a good test case. If a defensive core sounds like a foundation to build on, Mounthaven will suit you and this is one of the boxes to start from. If it sounds like a slow afternoon, look at a faction with more forward motion.
