Sixteen defense dice sounds excessive right up until a heavy vehicle absorbs a full volley and you find yourself rolling the same four dice three separate times to resolve one attack.

That batching is exactly where mistakes creep in. Roll a pool in stages and it becomes genuinely difficult to remember how many blocks have already been counted, especially with surge conversions and cover both in play. Enough dice to resolve a save in one throw removes an entire category of disagreement, and it speeds up a turn noticeably once both players are shooting into large units.

The split between the two colours reflects how the game actually uses them, since white is far more common across most rosters while red concentrates on armor and characters.
